Urban Revivo Flagship Store Reimagines Beijing’s Architectural Memory

In Beijing’s Sanlitun district, the Urban Revivo Flagship Store turns retail into a dialogue between memory and movement. Designed by MVRDV, the building draws from the city’s architectural heritage while translating its familiar forms into a distinctly contemporary language.

Its façade is the first point of transformation. Suspended aluminium tiles and tubes, finished with a dichroic coating, shift between shades of purple and blue as the light changes and visitors move around the building. The surface never settles into a single appearance. It changes with the city, becoming a constantly moving image rather than a fixed exterior.

The references to Beijing’s past are woven into the architecture with equal precision. The entrance and display windows reinterpret the traditional moon gate, while textured grey brick surfaces recall the material character of the city’s historic hutongs. As visitors move through the building and ascend its levels, these references gradually give way to more fluid and contemporary geometries, creating a spatial progression from architectural memory toward the future.

The store’s identity extends beyond its circulation and surfaces. Six immersive Bold Rooms introduce a series of distinct environments, each with its own atmosphere and material language. Recycled textiles become playful installations in one space, while another is enveloped in soft, cushion-like surfaces, transforming the act of shopping into something more tactile, exploratory and spatial.

Urban Revivo’s flagship store is ultimately less a container for fashion than a constantly shifting architectural experience. Beijing’s past remains present in its details, while the building’s changing skin and evolving interior insist on looking forward.
