Where water meets earth, landscapes begin to take form. At the Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi, Mecanoo transforms this meeting point into the central idea of an architecture shaped by movement, geological time and continuous transformation.
Rather than conceiving the museum as an isolated object, the project emerges from the landscape itself. Its sculpted volumes draw inspiration from the geological formations and wadis of the region, creating the impression of a terrain shaped slowly by natural forces. The experience of natural history therefore begins before the visitor enters the building, in the encounter with an architecture that appears to have risen from the earth.
Across the project, pentagonal patterns derived from cellular structures found in nature establish a visual and conceptual continuity between the building and its surroundings. The geometry becomes more than a formal language: it reflects the hidden systems that organise the natural world, from the smallest living organisms to the vast formations of the geological landscape.
The museum is conceived as a place where the city, architecture and landscape remain in constant conversation. Its form does not seek to separate the visitor from the world outside, but to create a gradual passage between the constructed and the natural, between the experience of living in Abu Dhabi and the deeper histories contained within the earth beneath it.
