A Contemporary Landmark Rooted in the Landscape of the Fjord

Rising directly from the waters of Vejle Fjord, Fjordenhus stands as one of the most distinctive architectural works created by Olafur Eliasson and Sebastian Behmann together with Studio Olafur Eliasson. Conceived before the establishment of Studio Other Spaces, the project occupies a central position within the redevelopment of Vejle’s harbor district, where industrial infrastructure has gradually given way to residential and cultural interventions.

Located beside Havneøen, an artificial island introduced as part of the municipality’s broader urban strategy, the building acts as a visual anchor at the edge of the fjord. Seen from the city’s main axis, its sculptural silhouette emerges from the water with the Vejle Fjord Bridge stretching across the background. The surrounding public space extends this dialogue between architecture and landscape through stone surfaces, open waterfront access, and a jetty designed by landscape architect Günther Vogt.

The structure reaches twenty-eight meters in height and is composed of four intersecting cylindrical volumes clad in carefully detailed brickwork. Large ellipsoidal voids carved into the facades generate curved openings and recessed windows that alter the building’s appearance from every angle. The geometry produces a continuous interplay between mass, light, reflection, and shadow, reinforcing the relationship between the architecture and the shifting atmosphere of the fjord.

Inside, each floor follows a unique spatial configuration organized around circular and elliptical forms. Spiral staircases connect the levels through rounded vestibules, while custom-designed furniture and lighting contribute to the immersive character of the interiors. The public ground floor opens directly toward the surrounding water, allowing the fjord itself to become part of the architectural experience. Two site-specific artworks by Olafur Eliasson occupy this lower level, integrating moving reflections, aquatic surfaces, and natural light into the daily life of the building.

Rather than functioning solely as an office structure or urban landmark, Fjordenhus explores how architecture can heighten awareness of place through material, geometry, and environmental interaction. The project transforms the harbor edge into a space where art, landscape, and public life intersect within a continuously changing natural setting.
