Nendo Transforms the Fishing Boat Into a Space of Comfort and Safety

Nendo has reimagined the fishing vessel through a project that brings together refined aesthetics and a strong commitment to safety. Long associated with harsh working conditions, industrial functionality, and little concern for comfort, the fishing boat is transformed here into an environment that feels unexpectedly sophisticated without losing sight of its original purpose.

The project challenges the traditional image of maritime labor spaces. Instead of treating the vessel as a purely utilitarian object, the designers approached it as a place where people spend months of their lives under physically and mentally demanding conditions. The result is an interior language closer to contemporary hospitality design than to conventional naval engineering, with carefully balanced proportions, restrained materials, and a calm visual atmosphere that evokes the elegance of a private yacht rather than the roughness usually associated with commercial fishing.

Behind the visual refinement lies an equally important concern for human wellbeing. Nendo developed the vessel around the idea that workers operating in isolated and exhausting environments deserve spaces capable of reducing stress and fatigue. Safety became a defining principle of the project, integrated into every aspect of the design rather than treated as a secondary technical requirement.

In a statement shared on social media, the studio explained that the concept was shaped around three key elements: straight lines, unevenness, and massiveness. Architectural references inspired by buildings, windows, and urban screens were introduced throughout the interiors in order to create a stronger psychological connection to life on land. Variations in texture, pattern, and lighting were used to prevent visual fatigue during long periods at sea, while solid and grounded forms were meant to counterbalance the unsettling sensation of constant movement on the water.

The final result is more than a redesign of a working vessel. It is a reconsideration of how environments dedicated to labor can also become spaces of dignity, protection, and comfort for the people who inhabit them every day.
